Dr. Anyokwu emphasizes individualized care, ongoing support and the important role mental health can play throughout the recovery process.

Recovery is a process, and that process can look very different from one person to another. Progress deserves to be recognized, and people should know that needing continued support is not a failure.”

ATLANTA, GA, UNITED STATES, September 8, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- ATLANTA, GA — September 8, 2026 — In recognition of National Recovery Month this September, Dr. Okah “Justin” Anyokwu and Avant Interventional Psychiatry are bringing attention to the relationship between mental health, substance use and long-term recovery.

Recovery Month is recognized nationally each September as an opportunity to celebrate people in recovery, recognize the professionals and support systems that help make recovery possible, and increase awareness of behavioral health resources.

According to Dr. Anyokwu, recovery is highly individual, and understanding a person’s mental health can be an important part of determining what support they may need.

“Mental health and substance use don’t always exist separately,” said Dr. Anyokwu, Medical Director of Avant Interventional Psychiatry. “When we’re helping someone move forward, it’s important to understand the whole person — what they’re experiencing emotionally, what challenges they’re facing and what kind of support will help them maintain progress.”

Individuals experiencing substance-use concerns may also experience depression, anxiety, trauma or other psychiatric symptoms. Addressing those concerns as part of a comprehensive treatment plan can help providers better understand the factors affecting a patient’s overall well-being.

Dr. Anyokwu also emphasizes that recovery should not be viewed as a single moment or milestone.

“Recovery is a process, and that process can look very different from one person to another,” he said. “Progress deserves to be recognized, and people should know that needing continued support is not a failure. Support is part of the process.”

Avant Interventional Psychiatry provides comprehensive psychiatric and behavioral health services to patients throughout Georgia, including psychiatric evaluations, medication management, psychotherapy and telepsychiatry.

The practice’s approach emphasizes individualized treatment and collaboration between patients, families and healthcare professionals when appropriate.

National Recovery Month also provides an opportunity to address the stigma that can prevent individuals from discussing substance use or mental health concerns.

Dr. Anyokwu believes changing the language surrounding behavioral health is an important part of helping more people feel comfortable seeking care.

“When people believe they’re going to be judged, they may be less likely to talk about what they’re experiencing,” Dr. Anyokwu said. “We want people to know that asking for support is something that should be respected.”

Throughout September and beyond, Avant Interventional Psychiatry will continue encouraging conversations surrounding mental health, recovery and access to behavioral healthcare resources across Georgia.
