Israel Loses Another Soldier in Lebanon

(MENAFN) An Israeli reserve soldier was fatally wounded and nine others injured in southern Lebanon on Sunday, the Israeli army confirmed, as violations of a fragile temporary truce continued to mount.

The military identified the fallen soldier as Master Sgt. Lidor Porat, 31, who died during an incident in which nine additional troops sustained injuries — one of them critically. The Israeli army did not elaborate further on the circumstances of the attack.

Porat's death raises to 15 the total number of Israeli soldiers killed since March 2, when Israel dramatically escalated its military operations across Lebanon.

The bloodshed comes despite a 10-day temporary ceasefire that took effect at midnight Thursday local time. US President Donald Trump had announced that both parties reached agreement on the truce, raising initial hopes of a sustained pause in hostilities.

Yet the fragile calm has shown significant cracks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled limited commitment to the agreement, stating that Israel accepted the ceasefire but would maintain a continued military presence across territories it currently occupies in southern Lebanon.

True to that position, the Israeli army has pressed ahead with strikes since the truce began, asserting the operations are aimed squarely at Hezbollah — a stance critics say directly undermines the terms of the agreement brokered just days ago.
