African Union Warns Gulf War Could Harm Global Trade

(MENAFN) The African Union (AU) has expressed concern over rising instability in the Persian Gulf, condemning attacks targeting energy and transportation infrastructure as the conflict linked to US-Israeli strikes on Iran continues to intensify. The organization warned that the growing violence could disrupt international supply networks and negatively impact African economies.

In a statement released Monday, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he is closely following what he described as “concerning incidents” in the region and urged all parties involved to demonstrate “maximum restraint” while working toward a “swift de-escalation” of tensions.

“Stability in the Gulf region is of particular importance for global energy security and the international economy, with direct implications for African economies,” Youssouf stated.

He noted that the consequences of the escalating crisis are already being felt, pointing to rising oil prices, interruptions to trade routes, and airspace closures that are affecting African exporters, airlines, and citizens residing in Gulf countries. The AU official also emphasized the need to protect civilians and ensure safe passage for foreign nationals, including Africans living in the region.

The warning comes as hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran have expanded into the Persian Gulf. Iran has carried out strikes against US bases and other assets across the region in response to the February 28 US-Israeli attacks on Iran that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, several senior commanders, and numerous civilians.
