US Envoy Skips French Foreign Ministry Meeting Over Controversial Remarks

(MENAFN) In an unusual diplomatic development, the United States ambassador to France did not attend a scheduled meeting at the French Foreign Ministry on Monday after being formally summoned, according to reports.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced a day earlier that he would call in Ambassador Charles Kushner. The move followed a post by the US Embassy on the social media platform X claiming that "violent left-wing extremism is on the rise" and associating it with the killing of Quentin Deranque.

Barrot dismissed the statement, arguing that it amounted to interference in France’s internal affairs.

Deranque, known for his far-right activism, died on Feb. 12 after being severely beaten during a clash involving individuals described as hard-left activists.

French broadcaster reported that Kushner failed to appear for the planned meeting at the ministry.

French authorities indicated that the ambassador’s absence would carry repercussions. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said that, "Faced with this apparent misunderstanding of the basic expectations of the mission of an ambassador who has the honor of representing his country,” Barrot requested that Kushner “no longer be able to directly access members of the French government."

At the same time, officials clarified that the envoy could still seek discussions at the ministry in an effort to defuse the situation.

Charles Kushner — father of Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of Donald Trump — was confirmed as Washington’s ambassador to France in May 2025.
