Trump Says Putin, Zelensky Ready for Peace Deal

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has declared that Russian President Vladimir Putin “wants to make a [peace] deal” to end the Ukraine conflict.

In an interview with a media outlet on Thursday, Trump recalled that he “had cases where I had Putin all done and Zelensky wouldn’t make the deal, which shocked me.”

He added, “Then I’ve had cases where it was the reverse.” Trump concluded that “now they both want to make a deal,” though he declined to provide a timeline for when Washington might finalize an agreement.

At the end of December 2025, Trump met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Miami to discuss a potential peace framework. During a press briefing, Trump remarked that “we’re doing very well” and “we could be very close,” noting that 95% of the issues had already been settled.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov later echoed Trump’s evaluation of the peace process. Russian authorities, including Putin, have consistently emphasized that Moscow prefers a diplomatic resolution but will continue military action if its core objectives cannot be achieved through negotiations.

Talks mediated by the US between Russian and Ukrainian representatives have gained momentum in recent months, following the leak of Trump’s original 28-point peace proposal in November 2025. That plan reportedly included Kiev surrendering the remainder of Donbass to Moscow, abandoning its NATO membership ambitions, and limiting the size of its armed forces, among other provisions.

Since then, the US blueprint has been revised multiple times, incorporating feedback from both Russia and Ukraine.
