Trump promises big profits after meeting oil executives on Venezuela
“It was a great meeting we had today with the biggest companies anywhere in the world,” Trump told reporters while departing the executive mansion for his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
“They're going to be going in with hundreds of billions of dollars and drilling oil.”
The remarks come after Trump ordered a pre-dawn military operation in Venezuela on January 3, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. The couple was flown out of Venezuela and is now facing trial in the US on charges related to drugs and weapons, maintaining their innocence in court.
“Everybody’s going to be happy in South America, everybody. What we've done is, some people would say it's a miracle, actually, what was done. Venezuela is happy. I think they're all going to be happy,” Trump added.
Following the operation, the Venezuelan government announced it would start an “exploratory process” to reestablish diplomatic communications with the US. “For the purpose of addressing this situation within the framework of international law, and in strict adherence to the principles of national sovereignty and the Bolivarian Diplomacy of Peace, the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela has decided to initiate an exploratory process of a diplomatic nature with the Government of the United States of America,” the statement said.
At the same time, Caracas denounced the US operation as “criminal, illegitimate, and illegal aggression,” claiming it caused more than 100 civilian and military casualties and violated international law.
