India Rejects EU Sanctions on Russia
In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs declared that New Delhi "does not subscribe to any unilateral sanction measures" and emphasized its role as a "responsible actor" in the global energy market.
The statement further highlighted India's commitment to ensuring energy security, noting that "the provision of energy security is a responsibility of paramount importance to meet the basic needs of its citizens."
The Ministry also underscored that energy trade should not be subject to double standards, particularly when it comes to the global exchange of energy resources.
These comments were made in response to the European Union’s 18th package of sanctions, which were recently introduced in Brussels to pressure Moscow over its ongoing involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
The new sanctions focus mainly on limiting Russia's oil sector revenues, including a ban on importing refined petroleum products that are derived from Russian crude oil.
Additionally, the sanctions targeted India’s second-largest private refinery, Nayara Energy's Vadinar facility in Gujarat.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas highlighted this move by saying, “For the first time, we’re designating a flag registry and the biggest Rosneft refinery in India,” on the social media platform X.
