N. Korea Halts Access for Foreign Tourists to New Coastal Resort
(MENAFN) North Korea has abruptly halted access for foreign visitors to its newly inaugurated Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area, just weeks after the luxury seaside resort began operations, according to the country’s national tourism agency.
The restriction was first reported by media, a US-based media outlet specializing in North Korean affairs, which cited an official announcement from the National Tourism Administration.
Situated along the eastern shoreline of the Korean Peninsula, the expansive resort overlooks the East Sea and boasts over 400 architecturally distinct buildings. Its amenities include water parks, sports complexes, and a diverse array of restaurants and entertainment facilities.
The resort officially opened earlier this month and was showcased domestically as a flagship initiative of leader Kim Jong Un. State-run outlets heralded the launch as a “gift” to the people, portraying the development as a symbol of “people-first politics” and a transformative blueprint for the nation’s tourism industry.
Authorities have not disclosed any explanation for the unexpected travel ban on foreigners, nor have they stated when or if the restriction will be lifted.
