Australia Ships Most of M1A1 Abrams Tanks to Ukraine
In a formal statement, Defense Minister Richard Marles emphasized, "The Albanese Government continues its steadfast support for Ukraine, with the transfer of the first tranche of Australian-gifted M1A1 Abrams tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine."
The remaining tanks are expected to arrive over the next several months.
These American-manufactured tanks are part of Australia's broader $1.5 billion Australian dollar (approximately $980.4 million USD) aid package designated for Ukraine.
Beyond tank deliveries, Canberra intends to maintain its training programs for Ukrainian troops and will dispatch a Royal Australian Air Force E-7A Wedgetail aircraft to Europe in August. The aircraft will play a critical role as it will "help protect a vital international gateway for assistance to Ukraine," according to the government release.
Marles reinforced Australia’s commitment by stating, “Australia remains steadfast in our support for Ukraine and seeing a just and lasting peace.”
Since the onset of Russia’s "special military operation" in February 2022, Australia has continuously provided military aid and defense resources to Ukraine, while also enforcing sanctions against Moscow.
