Clashes Persist in Syria’s Suwayda Amid Security Deployment

(MENAFN) Armed confrontations persisted on Saturday between Bedouin tribal fighters and local militias in Suwayda, Syria, even as internal security forces began mobilizing throughout the province to enforce a newly declared nationwide ceasefire.

A state-controlled news outlet reported that security personnel have commenced their deployment in and around Suwayda with the mission to uphold the ceasefire agreement and restore order.

Despite these efforts, heavy fighting continues to plague certain areas within the province, the agency confirmed.

Earlier on Saturday, the Syrian presidency declared a full and immediate ceasefire after several days marked by violent clashes in the southern region.

The unrest erupted on July 13 when confrontations ignited between Bedouin Arab tribes and armed Druze factions in Suwayda.

Hostilities intensified further, prompting Israeli airstrikes targeting Syrian military sites and infrastructure, including locations in the capital, Damascus.

Israel justified its strikes by claiming the necessity to defend Druze communities within the region.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who had led the country for almost 25 years, departed to Russia in December, bringing an end to the Baath Party’s rule that had lasted since 1963.

In January, Syria saw the establishment of a transitional government under President Ahmad al-Sharaa, marking a significant political shift.
