UN Applauds DR Congo, Rwanda Peace Deal

(MENAFN) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed approval of the peace accord brokered by the United States on Friday between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), signed in Washington, DC.

"This Agreement is a significant step towards de-escalation, peace and stability in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Great Lakes region," Guterres stated in an official message.

He praised the United States for orchestrating the deal, working alongside Qatar and African Union negotiator, Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe.

Guterres also recognized the efforts of the five co-mediators appointed by the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community.

"I urge the parties to honor in full the commitments they have undertaken in the Peace Agreement and pursuant to Security Council resolution 2773 (2025), including the cessation of hostilities and all other agreed measures," he emphasized.

The UN, including through its peacekeeping force in the DRC (MONUSCO), remains "fully committed" to helping carry out the accord, Guterres noted, in partnership with the African Union, regional bodies, and global stakeholders.

During a formal signing event with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the foreign affairs ministers of both African nations endorsed the much-anticipated pact aimed at resolving years of violent unrest.
